7 Signs of Gutter Damage on Your Home

damaged rain gutter

If you are like a lot of people, your gutters are not something you really worry about. They need regular gutter cleaning, but otherwise, their functionality is incredibly simple.

It’s not until gutters aren’t doing their job that you realize how important they are!

WHAT DO GUTTERS DO?

Gutters and downspouts go virtually unnoticed on most roofs in Columbia. They fade into the exterior unless the homeowner chose copper or wood … building materials that are designed to stand out! Most are made of durable yet lightweight aluminum or vinyl siding.

The purpose of gutters is to provide a path of minimal resistance for rain and snow to get off your roof quickly. When they’re in good condition, your rain gutters will route runoff away from the foundation and landscaping, protecting your home’s exterior from mold and mildew, the foundation and basement from leaking water, and the rain gutters themselves from rust.

When they are damaged, it can cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your house and property.

ARE YOUR GUTTERS DAMAGED?

Gutter damage is too simple to fix to be the cause of any major home repairs! Inspecting your gutters is easy and safe. If you see any of the following issues, it’s a pretty good clue that your rain gutters have some type of damage.

As soon as you find a possible gutter problem, you can decide whether it’s something you feel comfortable repairing or remedying by yourself or if it’s a project you’d rather trust a gutter specialist for.

Sitting Water Near Your Home

Pooling water near your home is a sure sign that your gutters or downspouts are not routing the water runoff away from your house the way they should be. Pooling water can result in mold, weakening of your foundation, and creates the perfect habitat for mosquitoes. And, it will leave the areas surrounding your home constantly soggy and muddy.

Mold or Mildew

Mold or mildew is a bad sign, whether you see mold or mildew on the gutters or on the sides of your house. Mold and mildew indicate that there is a lot of moisture in that area – a potential problem with the rain gutters could be to blame. Keep in mind that mold and mildew are more likely to appear on the north side of a home anyway, so if that’s where these substances are growing, it might just be because that area doesn’t get a lot of direct sunlight on it. This is a scenario when the advice and knowledge of a professional in Columbia would be helpful.

Rain Pouring Over the Gutter

You’ll have to wait until it’s actually raining to find this type of gutter issue. Hopefully this doesn’t mean you have gutter damage. It could just be that the gutter is full of debris and should be cleaned. In either case, you want to have it looked at ASAP.

Basement Leaks

Depending on the construction of your basement, the leaking could be caused by any number of things. The standing water problem we discussed before could definitely lead to a basement leak. Egress windows and even cinder block walls will only keep out so much water. That’s why it is so important to keep your gutters in good shape!

Landscaping or Lawn Damage

Rain gutters pour directly onto the ground most of the time, and landscaping should be laid out to work with this water flow to help it submerge into the ground. However, a leaking gutter or clogged gutter will allow rainfall to overflow or pool where it shouldn’t. This standing rain water can destroy plants by force or by overwatering. It might also displace flower bed materials like mulch or rock.

Water Marks

Water marks are a visible sign that there is excessive moisture on a surface. Water marks are sometimes left behind even if standing water has evaporated or dissipated. You usually find water marks beneath the rain gutters or directly behind the downspouts. This is a usually a sign that rain water is streaming down the outside of the gutters and not staying inside of them.

Visible Gutter Damage

The last sign of gutter damage is the easiest to spot. If your gutters are bent, sagging or cracked, they obviously have damage. After a storm, it’s a good idea to walk around your house to assess any possible damage to the roof shingles, outer walls, and gutters. These inspections are in addition to your standard home inspections.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR GUTTERS?

Here are a few easy ways WeClean Columbia Gutters recommends to prevent gutter damage:

Clean your gutters out at least one time each year. You can extend the amount of time between gutter repairs by having them cleaned out regularly. Like with anything else, the better you maintain your gutters, the less issues you’ll have with them.

The recommended time to clean gutters is during the spring, but to be extra cautious, give them a good cleaning in the fall, too. Most homeowners clean their gutters themselves, but there are local gutter cleaning companies that provide this service so you don’t have to deal with the work or the risk.

Inspect your gutters often. Signs of damage can be visible from the outside of the gutters. Just a fast inspection – with both feet firmly on the ground – should reveal any of the problems we mentioned above.

We’d recommend that you do an exterior home inspection following each season to confirm that your gutters are functioning correctly.

When you see signs of gutter damage, act fast. Taking care of a problem before it becomes too bad can save you a lot of time and money. A small crack, for example, can be sealed, or the section of gutter with the crack can be replaced very affordably.

However, if you let the issue go on for too long, you could end up making repairs in your basement, replacing vinyl siding or redoing an entire section of landscaping.
